Learn how to use JoinXR's snapping tool to align your content more easily. This tool is useful for 2D content including images, notes, and labels, allowing you to align their corners precisely. Additionally, you can add Snap Points to 3D models, facilitating the alignment of different objects, such as wheels snapping onto a hub.
Preferences
When wearing a headset, you can modify your preferences for snapping in the Tools menu.
Toggling Snapping
Snapping is enabled by default, but sometimes it's useful to disable snapping for fine adjustment. You can disable it by toggling the Enable button.
Snap Point Visualization
Sometimes it's useful to see where the snap points when putting together a document. Snap Point visualization is off by default, but you can turn it on by pressing the Show Snap button.
Adding Snap Points to your 3D models
Adding Snap Points to your 3D models can be a powerful tool in JoinXR and it can be done very easily. JoinXR will look for any nodes in your model hierarchy that start with the words "SnapPoint" and will create a Snap Point for each node it finds which meets those criteria.
A common workflow:
- Open up your model in a content creation package of your choice (i.e Blender, Max, Maya)
- Create an empty/locator object where you want the snap point to be.
- Name the node "SnapPoint". Some content creation packages require nodes to be uniquely named, if so it's fine to name the Snap Points "SnapPoint.001, SnapPoint.002, etc"
- Export the model as you normally would and upload it to JoinXR
It is important to note that the rotation and scale of the snap points matter as it will not only snap the position, but rotation and scale too.
It is also recommended to keep the scale of the Snap Points set to 1 when dealing with real-world scale objects.
It can be possible to add Snap Points from within a CAD package too. Contact us if you would like help with a specific CAD package.
